Serves 4

Ingredients
Toor dal (red gram dal) 1 cup Turmeric Powder 1 tsp
Onion 1/2 Salt to taste
Chillies 2 Lemon juice or 1/4 cut lemon
Ginger small piece Ghee
Coriander leaves few

For seasoning

Ingredients
Mustard seeds 1 tsp Asafoetida a pinch
Cumin seeds 1 tsp Oil 2 tbsps
Curry leaves few

Method

  1. Cut onion lengthwise and slit chillies. Pressure cook dal with enough water or cook nicely till soft.
  2. Take a pot and pour cooked dal and mash. Add about 2 cup of water and start cooking again. Add turmeric powder, onion, chillies, salt and ginger.
  3. Allow it to boil. Lastly, add chopped coriander leaves and keep aside.Now, heat oil in a pan and season with mustard seeds, asafoetida and cumin seeds.
  4. When the seeds pop up, add curry leaves. Pour this on top of the prepared dal. Now thovve is ready to eat and usually it is served hot with rice.
  5. Add 1 tsp of ghee and lemon juice while mixing with rice.
Note : The consistency of the dal can be adjusted according to your taste by adding desired water.
